Technology at St. Thomas

As we progress into the 21st Century, the skills needed to master the technology of today and tomorrow become increasingly important in our education system. As adults, we are surrounded by technology, and the pace of advancement is accelerating. For students, learning to use computers and technology is very important. At Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic School, the administration is the driving force in providing technology equipment and staff to help students get the best possible education for using this technology.

As the Technology Coordinator for Saint Thomas, it is my responsibility:

  • To provide the administration advice and direction on the use of technology in the school
  • To coordinate the distribution, installation, and maintenence of technology equipment
  • To support the teachers and staff in their use of technology within the school

In addition, I am in the middle of numerous projects that will enhance the overall education experience at the school. In particular, we are nearing completion of the technology upgrades for each classroom. Each classroom contains:

  • A SmartBoard for use in classroom instruction. A SmartBoard is an electronic whiteboard designed to provide a presentation system that interacts with a computer. For more information on the SmartBoard, click here for the Smart Tech website.
  • A projector that integrates the video output of the PC for the Smart Board as well as a DVD/VCR player including audio (PC Speaker) output for playback and computer interaction.
  • Installation of Cox Cable TV (Cox in the Classroom) for use in current events and other classroom projects
  • Minimum 6 PC's in each classroom grades K-4.
  • Support Website, e-mail, and other internet services for students, teachers, and staff.

We continue to evaluate new technologies and to find ways to integrate them into our curriculum. The goal is to give each student who graduates, the skills necessary to compete in the world of tomorrow.
